The UCLA Craniofacial Clinic is a center for providing diagnostic, consultative, and treatment services for patients with congenital and acquired craniofacial anomalies. Craniofacial deformities are the most common birth defects in America. One child in 650 is born with some type of craniofacial deformity and thousands more each year are victims of accidents that affect the head and face.

The UCLA Craniofacial Clinic is one of the largest centers in the West for the rehabilitation of the facially disfigured. The expertise of specialists from several disciplines is drawn upon to provide the comprehensive care needed by children with craniofacial problems.

The newly referred patient is usually scheduled for a minimum of two appointments. The child is first seen by the pediatric coordinator, who determines the appropriate specialist neede to provide comprehensive care, who provided orientation to the Craniofacial Clinic Program and is available to the family for counseling . Following the intake evaluations the other team members schedule the patient for evaluations. The child may have as many as eight or ten consultations.

A Team Conference is scheduled immediately after the initial consultation. The treatment recommendations and their priorities are presented and discussed with the patient and family. Copies of the Team's report and recommendations are sent to the referring physician or the agency and to the medical and dental personnel who will provide the care. The parents also receive a summary of the recommendations.

Although care can be provided at UCLA, treatments (such as dental, orthodontics, and speech) can be referred to local private practitioners. However, in order to maintain a team approach the child should be evaluated by the team annually.

A child with a craniofacial problem, either congenital or acquired will need the best possible program for rehabilitation. The team approach provides input from various disciplines in a single setting and is beneficial in the long term care of the child.
