Amanda DIAGNOSIS: Goldenhaar's Syndrome, Hemifacial Microsomia Amanda was born without an ear and with a nose that was only a tear dropped piece of skin. She had been told that she would need to have a bone removed from her leg to reconstruct her face, but Amanda is a dancer and this surgery would have prevented her from dancing. Fortunately, after visiting Facing Forward, Amanda was offered a better alternative with a novel procedure by the UCLA Cranialfacial team and she was able to have lower jaw, ear and nose reconstructive surgery without having to give up dancing.
The final stages of Amanda surgeries are planned for next summer. These surgeries involve moving her orbit and eye up to a normal location to match the other eye. This surgery is involved and will cost $23,400 (discounted anesthesia fees=$5,600; hospital fees=$17,800; surgeon's fees=donated). And we still need donations!
Joshua DIAGNOSIS: Fusion of jaws and Pierre Robin's Sequence. Joshua was born with a cleft palate, small jaw, and fused joints in his jaw, which prevented him from being able to chew his food and his speech was not understandable.
After visits with Facing Forward he was offered the opportunity to gain movement in his jaw and have his cleft repaired.
Joshua has had successful surgery to help his speech but still needs more jaw surgery to help with chewing and swallowing. In addition, he needs major dental work. The cost of these final surgeries will be $18,700 (discounted anesthesia fees=$3,500; hospital fees=15,200; surgeon's fees=donated).
Tiffany DIAGNOSIS: Craniofacial Microsomia (missing lower jaw), Tracheotomy, with Microtia. Tiffany had a tracheostomy soon after birth because of respiratory distress.
Tiffany was one of the "Sponsor-a-child" children at last year's fund raising event. From this benefit she was able to have her successful rib grafts for jaw reconstruction recently. We hope to be able to remove her tracheostomy later this year. In addition, it is our goal for Tiffany to have outer ears reconstructed in 2006. This 3-staged procedure will cost $28,900 (discounted anesthesia fees=$5,600; hospital fees=$23,300; surgeon's fees=donated).
Camille DIAGNOSIS: Right facial tumor (Rhabdomyosarcoma) with radiation injury from treatment Camille was born normal, but developed a large aggressive tumor, as a 7 year old, involving the right lower jaw and neck. She underwent curative surgery and radiation. However, this treatment resulted in a severely scarred, tilted neck and poorly developed jaw. Camille is a highly intelligent teenager who is interested in fashion design. Last year Camille underwent a fibular free flap from her calf to her right mandible. This procedure helped give Camille a move functioning jaw; however, she still needs further jaw lengthening surgery and lower jaw joint reconstruction. This will cost $19,300 (discounted anesthesia fees = $2,100; hospital fees = $17,200; surgeon's fees = donated).
